Definition

A market session is a defined period when a venue or regional market conducts regular, extended, auction, or otherwise specified trading activity.

In market context

Official hours, holidays, breaks, and opening or closing auctions differ by venue and can change the liquidity available to an order. Regional overlaps may deepen participation while scheduled releases make prices move faster, and continuous crypto trading still shows time-dependent liquidity. Traders should use the instrument’s current official calendar and account for time zones, daylight-saving changes, closures, and overnight gaps.
